What Love Is

Written By: Yvette Boulanger

Chapter 1

Agnes and Elin have been together for 2 months now and their feelings have grown stronger as the days wore on. They knew it was time to tell their families about their relationship. They were quite nervous about how their families would react. Their heads, hung low as they walked towards Agnes' apartment. Elin looked at Agnes for reassurance. Agnes just sighed. She felt the same way as Elin. They knew it wouldn't be easy coming out to their parents. All they hoped was that at least their parents wouldn't try and ignore their feelings.

Agnes and Elin had decided that they wanted all of their parents together when they told them of their feelings. A small light hung from the ceiling as the girls climbed the stairs of Anges' apartment .The light flickered as they made their way up. They finally reached the top of the stairs and stood in front of Agnes' doorway. They looked at each other again, not saying a word. Agnes opened up the front door and they both walked slowly inside. Their parents had been talking to each other, but once the girls entered the room, they stopped. The girls stood in the middle of Agnes' living room. Their parents were sitting on the couch patiently. The parents looked at Agnes and Elin.

"We asked all you here, because we have something important to tell you." explained, Agnes.

At first she wasn't sure how she was going to explain that she and Elin were in love. She looked to floor and then towards Elin. Agnes paused before continuing. She decided that she would just come right out and say it. Agnes looked at her parents as well as Elin's mother, Birgitta. She sighed.

"Elin and I are in love." said, Agnes.

Elin walked closer to Agnes and clasped her hand with Agnes', looked at her and smiled. The adults, sat on the couch, not saying a word. Karin, Agnes' Mother stood up from the couch, walked over to Agnes and Elin. She spoke.

"Don't be rediculous. You can't be in love! Elin is a girl." said, Karin. Karin looked at Agnes and then at Elin.

"I know she is, Mamma. We're....Lesbians." explained, Agnes.

"Is this true, Elin?" asked, Birgitta, with a concerned look on her face. She seemed very tired.

"Yes it is. We've been together for 2 months now." explained, Elin. She smiled at Agnes.

Karin's face was angry.

"No daughter of mine is love with a girl!!" shouted, Karin.

"Mamma!" Agnes, said with anger.

"Elin, I'm too tired to deal with this right now. Come with me, we're going home!". said, Birgitta, grabbing Elin by the arm and pulling her out of the living room as she stormed away. Elin lost her grip on Agnes' hand.

"Mamma! Let me go!" shouted, Elin.

"You're coming me with me....now!" replied, Birgitta. She continued to pull Elin towards the door.

"I'll call you later!" called out, Elin to Agnes.

During all of this, Olof, Agnes' Father, remained on the couch, not uttering a word.

Agnes felt a mix of tears and anger. She struggled to hold back her tears.

"You never understood me!! You never truly cared about my feelings or what I wanted!! You never did!".

Agnes gave, Karin a cold, yet sad look as she marched towards her bedroom. Her feet pounding the floor. As she left, she cast a harsh glance at her Father, and shouted to him,

"You just sat there and didn't do anything or say anything!!".

Olof opened his mouth to speak, but decided against it.

He watched his daughter, as she turned away and hurried down the hall that lead to her bedroom.

When she got to her room, she opened her door and slammed it. She then went over to her CD player and pressed "Play". Low, morose, music played as she plopped herself onto her bed. She lay on her bed and she began to cry and let the tears fall.

Chapter 2

Meanwhile, at Elin's apartment.

"Can't we talk about this?!" asked, Elin as she and Birgitta entered their apartment. Birgitta closed the door behind them.

"No! I'm going to go lie down. I have huge a headache." replied, Birgitta. She walked slowly in the direction of her bedroom.

"But, Mamma!" exclaimed, Elin.

As Birgitta, got close to her door, she turned to face Elin.

"Not now, Elin!" said, Birgitta, exasperated.

She turned to open her bedroom door, walked in and closed it. Elin stood in their living room for about 3 minutes, saying nothing and taking in all that had happened that afternoon. She decided she would try and talk to her Mother later. She walked over to the couch, sat down on it, reached for the telephone and dialed Agnes' number.

On the telephone at Agnes' apartment:

Karin: "Ahlberg?"

Elin: "This is Elin. May I speak to, Agnes?"

Karin: "I'm sorry, Agnes is not to speak to you ever again! And she is never to see you again, except in certain circumstances relating to school, which cannot be helped!"

Agnes had heard the phone ring and had entered the living room by that point.

"No Mama!! You can't do that to us!!" exclaimed, Agnes. Agnes was fuming by that point.

Elin: "I heard what Agnes said and I agree." "Please Mrs. Ahlberg! I'm begging you. Please reconsider!"

Karin- "The answer is no! I've made up my mind!"

And with that Karin hangs up the receiver and walks over to couch and sits down. Agnes looks, angrily at her Mother, her eyes, filled with fire. She marches right up to, Karin and exclaims, "I HATE you!!! You're horrible!!". Agnes then storms out of the living room and heads off towards her bedroom.
